REQUIEM
id289This refers to the service performed for the souls of those who reposed in Christ; that is, those who lived and died with Christian faith.
The faithful do not forget in prayers and petitions those who departed this world, as they know that their souls continue to live and remain as members of the Church in heaven.
Hence, the service for the reposed is not only a noble tradition held merely for memory of those who passed away, but proof of real (although invisible) connection with them.
By asking the Church to pray for the soul of the reposed, a Christian shows love and affection for the person as well as reinforces his own belief in the life to come.
Requiem often follows Divine Liturgy, but it can be held anywhere at any time, as necessary.
